2. History 2

Quagga's Established in 1971
Colours: Green and White Hoops
The Quagga is similar to the Zebra but with fewer stripes, smaller ears and broaders hoofs. They used to roam the Breedle Rriver Valley area of South Africa in herds of several hundred. The last wild Quagga was seen in 1858, but one survived in captivity until 1875 in the Amsterdam Zoological Gardens. Know only to a select few, a new strain is increasing in number throughout the mainland of Great Britain, with the largest concentration found in and around the West Cumbrian town of Workington.
Geoff Tweddle the Quaggas chair and former player died on the 6th August 2005. He will be greatly missed by all his family, friends, Quaggas and the club. He was a former captain and president, county player and not least the first captain and founder member of the Quaggas. His sort are hard to find, we will miss him.
We hope to arrange a few games during the season and end with the old Quaggas game and reunion so if you are interested in playing some social rugby, travelling to matches, having a criac, come on down. If you fancy helping to organise any of this or simply want to play --come on all you oldies -get down to The Ellis again.
